Your cowboy or cowgirl will love this rootin' tootin' class! This course is challenging, as it is designed for high ability learners who typically perform beyond grade-level expectations. In this class, we will learn about the wild west, including the following topics: * session 1: gold miners, trappers, pioneers, and scouts: making a living in pioneer times * session 2: Parasols and mustaches: "fancy dress" in the wild west * session 3: lawmen, outlaws, gangs, and gunfighters: justice in a lawless land * session 4: cattle drives, trains, and the pony express: traveling through wild country * session 5: tall tales and gunslinger shows: entertainment for cowboys and cowgirls Delivery model: This class will use a variety of instructional techniques to engage students, including photo discussion, video shorts, interactive games, read-alouds, slideshow presentations, and a "wild mustache" competition! I believe in flexibility, and allowing student interest and questioning to guide the course. Therefore, this is an estimation of how time will be spent: 5 minutes: share time- everyone deserves a turn to be heard! 10 minutes: lecture/ reading activity (direct instruction) 30 minutes: critical thinking/discussion activities/ interactive games 5 minutes: wrap-up It is very important to me that students have an opportunity to feel a sense of belonging and community. My primary goal in offering this course is to allow your student to learn something while getting to interact with true peers. While the course will encourage critical thinking, creativity, evaluation, reading, and other curricular skills, I am most interested in encouraging socialization and a joy of learning among high ability learners. I will always stay an extra 5-10 minutes to help a struggling student when it is needed! I am also very comfortable working with twice-exceptional children, but please let me know in advance how I can best assist to minimize frustration and maximize learning!

Parental Guidance
The old west is characterized as a very lawless and violent time in history. While I will not specifically "teach" some of the more violent aspects of this time period, it is reasonable to expect that other learners may come to this class with prior knowledge. Gifted learners often have deeper understandings of topics than non-gifted peers. Through class discussion, it is foreseeable that learners may bring up topics, including scalping, hanging, opium abuse, or other more serious topics.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a gifted specialist, I am trained and qualified to navigate a class discussion through difficult topics. I am trained to recognize the age-appropriateness of topics, and I can competently steer a conversation to more age-appropriate topics.
