Students will be given a brief introduction to the American Revolution before embarking on a journey in which they make predictions about the life of James Armistead Lafayette and how he helped the Patriots win the American Revolution. Throughout, students must use prediction and inferencing skills to make guesses about what happens next. We also use do some light mathematics and use our skills to break a code along the way! The instructor gives feedback to all students multiple times throughout the class and gives hints for each puzzle as needed.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about the life of James Armistead Lafayette and his role in the American Revolution. They will learn about the Marquis de Lafayette and the Battle of Yorktown.

Parental Guidance
We briefly discuss the role of slaves during and after the American Revolution, as James Armistead Lafayette was a slave who was originally not given his freedom after the war.
Supply List
Students will need scrap paper and a pencil. There are no handouts for this class.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I was a history major in college and worked in Colonial Williamsburg for a time afterward. I also taught 4th grade Virginia studies, and our curriculum covered James Armistead Lafayette. I like to make history like an adventurous story (which it often was for the people living it).
