Class Experience

Disclaimer: I do accept students that are below the age range listed, but this class is geared towards that specific age range. It also follows a lecture based model. Please keep this in mind when enrolling your student as some students do not tend to like this model or may not understand the material if they are below the age range.
The Manhattan Project was the code name for the American-led effort to develop a functional atomic weapon during World War II. The controversial creation and eventual use of the atomic bomb engaged some of the world’s leading scientific minds, as well as the U.S. military—and most of the work was done in Los Alamos, New Mexico, not the borough of New York City for which it was originally named. The Manhattan Project was started in response to fears that German scientists had been working on a weapon using nuclear technology since the 1930s—and that Adolf Hitler was prepared to use it. We will discover the planning, preparing and implementation of the Manhattan Project. The material will be taught through PowerPoint presentations, shorts videos, collaborative conversations and closed readings. I love for my students to learn not only from myself but through the help of their fellow classmates. This is my goal to have collaborative conversations that make each student question, answer and gauge their own level of knowledge about the topic. This course will be taught from the United States point of view, but shown respect and proper research towards outside countries.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
We will be discussing the outcome of the development of the Manhattan Project. The discussion of the bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki will be of facts rather than open for discussion, also. Very little time will be spent on these facts, as to ensure that the students know the statistics but do not go into great detail over these facts. These two topics are very important to the historical event, but will be taught in an age appropriate manner. This is why the age level is 13-18 as to ensure they are aware of these sensitive facts. It is extremely important as to explain why the United States responded in the way that they did.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My degree is in History with an emphasis in American History. While studying in my undergrad I specifically took a course based on all eras of American History. I have successfully taught my own students in the physical classroom for the past two years over topics that will be discussed in this course!

My minor in my degree is also in Social Sciences. I have taken multiple courses in psychology, sociology and the study of people. This allows me to gauge when a student may need. If your student may need additional emotional, mental or physical assistance I am certified by my state to do so with my Special Education licensure.
