Beginner Level
This flex schedule class "meets" once a week, which means there will be a new topic posted on Sundays which will be due by the following Saturday for seven weeks. It is meant to provide students with an overview of each of the main religions in the order in which they were founded (Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam). Students will also have the opportunity to explore an additional major world religion. The following will be taught each week that a new faith is covered: -When and where it was founded -Who was the founder(s), how it was established, as well as other important people -Name of their deity or deities -Holy book(s) -Core beliefs -Holy place(s) -Practices and laws -Holiday(s) and why and when they are celebrated The main focus of the class is that of developing a multi-cultural appreciation of the different beliefs, practices, and histories of the religious groups that people belong to. Students will have the opportunity to share their own take-aways while comparing and contrasting each religion. It is hoped that students will understand that many people while practicing different religions and believing different things, have more in common than previously thought. Students will be encouraged to post video comments on FlipGrid where they can comment and react to their classmates' posts (this is monitored by the instructor.) At all times, the teacher will be interacting with and answering questions through the OS classroom page. The course will be broken down as follows: Lesson 1- Teacher video with an overview, introduction to religion. Ted-Ed video with questions to be submitted.
