Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Explore the rich and diverse world of World literature! Build your knowledge of the different themes, styles, and genres of World literature, and as well the historical and cultural context in which these works were written. Improve your ability to discuss and write about literature in an effective and powerful way.

This is the 1st part in a 4 part, year-long World History course. This 8 week course will explore the 1st quarter of World Literature--the ancient world. We will explore pieces of great literature from a variety of locations and time periods. This course will explore the historical context for each piece within its geographical context, as well as the literary features of the writings. We will read a variety of genres of writing from the most significant World writers. Our focus each week will be a particular author or piece as representative of each greater literary movement. Students will be expected to read outside of class the pieces we are studying each week. There will be writing assignments each week that students can submit for additional feedback and assessment. This class is perfect for literary lovers, history lovers, or anyone just curious about world history and literary culture.

As a self-paced version of my World Literature 1 course, this course will offer no live class meetings. Instead, your student will have access to a class recording weekly to watch, as well as additional written and visual documents to augment the recording. The student will also have various quizzes and interactive assignments to check their understanding of the video content, creating a workshop feel during the 8 weeks. Also each week, students will have an opportunity to complete their own longer writing assignments related to the class content and to receive individualized teacher feedback.

This is the self-paced/not live version of my World Lit 1 course. This course coordinates with my World History 1, Ancient History, and Classical Age history courses.

I highly recommend taking my Literary Analysis Essay Writing course prior to or concurrent with this course to develop your literary writing skills.

From a former student, "Your literature classes really prepared me well for college but also continued developing my critical thinking skills, world view, and love of learning."

What you can expect from this class:
-an appreciation for World literature
-an understanding of the historical context for key pieces
-an increased ability to use literary analysis in discussion
-improvement in your literary analysis writing skills
-instructor feedback to help you meet your goals

Learning Goals

Students will develop their literary analysis skills, as well as their understanding of world literature.
