The world of great literature is extremely broad and full of wonderful authors that are mostly unknown to North American students. Many of these authors and their short stories are very available in English and very accessible to middle/high school learners. In this fun discussion-based summer camp we will discuss three Latin American short story writers. Julio Cortazar - "Night Face Up" https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/1967/04/22/the-night-face-up Clarice Lispector - "The Fifth Story" https://miamiartscharter.net/ourpages/auto/2017/8/23/55609573/LISPECTOR_%20Clarice_The%20Fifth%20Story.pdf Jorge Borges - "The Library of Babel" https://web.stanford.edu/class/history34q/readings/textualizingscience/library_of_babel.html We will talk about the background of each author, their historical and political setting, and the themes, structure and tropes of the pieces we read. *Students need to read each piece before class begins.* This is a discussion-intensive course. All students are expected to interact with respect and civility. I understand that the topics and themes can be controversial and invite disagreement. However, kindness facilitates productive and persuasive conversation.

"Night Face Up" is magical realism verging on horror. It is of great interest to students. However, if you feel that your student is particularly sensitive to violent unhappy endings, please feel free to read ahead and contact me with any questions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am eager to have your learner join the students from 5-50 to whom I have taught English. Although my original BA is in Psychology, I have taught both ESL and English at three different Universities abroad. I love students and I love literature. I am eager to help North American students get a worldwide perspective on literature drawing from my own experiences as a reader and a traveler.
