World Literature: Fairy Tales & Folklore of the World Book Club - The Little Mermaid

Description
Class Experience
Learners will read and discuss the traditional version of "The Little Mermaid," which was written by Hans Christian Andersen in Denmark in the 17th century. While numerous renditions of this story have since been created, this class focuses on the "original" European telling—the precursor to the popular Disney adaptation! Students are expected to read the story on their own outside of class. We will spend class time discussing the fairy tale, and studying cause and effect within the story....
As this is a literature course, it is reading intensive. Students will read "The Little Mermaid" independently outside of class—12 "Kindle" pages total in the recommended book, which seems to be about 30 print pages. Students will also write one cause and effect discussion post, due prior to the last day of class.
Students are expected to read the story for this course outside of class time. All of the classic folk and fairy tales are available for free in the public domain, and any translation you have or can access of the version we are studying (i.e., attributed to the author we are studying, Hans Christian Andersen) will work for the purposes of this world literature course. However, some translations are more enjoyable to read than others. Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
2 hours 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
We will be reading traditional, "un-Disney" versions of well-loved fairy tales, many of which do not have happily ever after endings. The classic fairy tales are known to be pretty grim, but learners who may be sensitive to gory stories or who are especially attached to a particular version of one of the tales may benefit from parental support. The book I recommend in the Learner Supply List has been deemed appropriate for this age group (and younger!) by the publisher. If you and your learner find the tales elsewhere, I recommend skimming through it first if there are any concerns about upset reactions.
