The world of great literature is extremely broad and full of wonderful poets that are mostly unknown to North American students. Many of these poems and poets are very available in English and very accessible to middle/high school learners. In this fun discussion-based summer camp we will discuss three Latin American poets. Pablo Neruda Gabrela Mistral Jorge Borges We will talk about the background of each poet, their historical and political setting, and the spectrum of their poetry. We will read and analyze at least two poems from each poet. This is a discussion-intensive course. All students are expected to interact with respect and civility. I understand that the topics and themes can be controversial and invite disagreement. However, kindness facilitates productive and persuasive conversation.

Students will be able to identify three well-known 20th-century Latin American poets, their backgrounds, and understand and enjoy one or more poems of theirs.Other Details
Parental Guidance
In Latin America, poets are often part of the political process. Both Neruda and Mistral served their governments in various ways. Like adults, students come to class with their own political views and opinions and are welcome to agree or disagree civilly with the political stances of these poets. This is a very minor part of the class since the poems we are covering are not political in nature.

Although my original BA is in Psychology, I have taught both ESL and English at three different Universities abroad. I love students and I love literature.
