In this one time course we'll talk about linguistics, which is the scientific study of language, and learners will be introduced to 25 basic words and phrases in Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese!
Class experience
Students will learn use their visual and auditory skills. At the start of class, students will listen and repeat after the instructor to learn basic greetings in English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. Once they see how easy that is, and hear how similar the languages sound, they will begin to understand the concept of a language family. The introductory class will teach students to recognize English to Spanish/Portuguese/French/Italian cognates through listening and speaking activities. Students will be introduced to 25 basic words and phrases in these languages and encouraged to practice during class as well as have the intention to use outside of the classroom.
In addition to being a licensed K-12 Spanish, K-12 ESL, K-12 Bilingual Special Education teacher, I have studied French, Italian, and Portuguese in college and have led multilingual summer camps.

Romance languages use general rules to identify the gender of nouns and adjectives and will be taught in the traditional manner. I do not have pedagogical training to teach neutral gender. If your learner has a non binary identity, I highly recommend having this conversation with your learner prior to enrollment and clearly indicate the preferred gender/pronoun so I can address your learner appropriately (ie. Amiga for females or those who identify as females and Amigo for males or those who identify as males).
