The course begins with an overview of the Physical Geography of Europe. Each subsequent week, we will focus on one European country, where the emphasis will be on Physical Geography, but Human Geography will also be covered. Please scroll down and look at the schedule below.

During each class, we will label and sometimes color at least two maps and discuss important topics as we do so. Geography is an extremely broad subject that overlaps with many other subjects such as Earth Science, Government, Economics, History, and English Language Arts. Depending on the country, we may touch on just some or all of these subjects. I almost always incorporate Greek and Latin roots into my lessons.

Links to the maps and the list of map locations are posted to the classroom approximately 24 hours before class. Students are expected to print these out and bring them to class along with a few colored pencils, a ruler, a medium-sized black marker, and a highlighter. There are usually two or three maps, plus a list of map locations. If you are able, please print these out in color so you can see the blue rivers more clearly. Black & white printouts are certainly acceptable.

**********NB: Upon arriving at class, students will be provided with a link that will take them directly to the Nearpod lesson. The learners will then split their screens so that Zoom appears on one side of their computer screen and Nearpod will appear on the other side of their computer screen. Learners who do not wish to split their screens can, alternatively, use two devices, where one device is on Zoom and the Nearpod lesson is on their other device, etc.

Students will locate and label the country and surrounding countries on a map. This will be shared with the other learners. Learners will draw in the major mountain ranges as well as label the most important rivers, lakes, deserts, plains, and cities of that country. There are many discussions about peninsulas, islands, archipelagos, disputed territories, language & religion, ethnic groups, the movement of people, climate, currents, where cities are located and why, etc. - There is just so much! Not all of this will be discussed in all meetings. We only have 55 minutes.

Most of my lessons include lots of map work, discussions, slides, short videos, and lectures.

It is expected that the students know their compass directions. N, E, S, W! (Never East Sour Watermelon!) :-)
(Never, Ever, Stop Wondering!)

If none of the days/times suit your schedule, please do not hesitate to contact me and request another section, or you can also create another section. Please understand, that I must have at least three students enrolled in a section to move forward with the section.

Notice I have not specified a country for the last five meetings. I have lessons prepared for most of the countries in Europe. Students will be able to choose the countries they wish to cover. Depending on how many students are in the section, either each student will be able to choose a country or we will discuss and agree as to what countries will be covered.

If you have a preference, please let me know upon enrollment.

Parental Guidance
I create all my lessons on Nearpod. The learners will be given a link to the Nearpod lesson at the beginning of each class. Learners should be familiar with splitting their screen, where Zoom will be on one side of the screen and the Nearpod lesson will be on the other side of the screen. This is not difficult to learn. If this is an unfamiliar skill for the learner, the parent may wish to assist the learner for the first lesson or two. Instead of splitting their screens, some learners choose to use two devices, which is ideal.
Pre-Requisites
Students should know their compass directions - North, East, South, West
