Class Experience

In this summer camp style multi-day class we'll spend a week traveling across much of continental Europe. Each day, we'll explore the history, culture, language, and food of different countries. Students will have the opportunity to practice key phrases in local languages. We'll explore historical significant cities, landmarks, and art. We'll touch on the European Union, and discuss how Europe has evolved into its present multicultural, borderless society. We'll also discuss the delicious and unique food of different cultures.

For our last day of camp, students will be have the option to complete and present a small project exploring one country, historical event, or cultural element from Europe. The project is intended to be fun and engaging, and will have a research, art, and writing component. The goal of this project is to create space for students to explore their own interests in greater depth. The project will take students no more than 45 minutes of outside class time to complete.

European history is extensive and this camp does not seek to cover everything- We'd need all summer for that! The primary goal of this summer camp is to excite students about travel in Europe, and encourage them to explore further on their own. Though this is a lecture based camp, we'll spend a lot of time discussing and students will be asked to engage in critical and creative thinking throughout.

Here is a meeting by meeting breakdown:
Meeting 1: Camp outline, Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway, Finland), & Denmark
Meeting 2:Netherlands, Belgium, France
Meeting 3: Spain, Portugal, & Italy
Meeting 4: Switzerland & Germany

Learning Goals

Students will learn about European life and the continents history, culture, & food. We'll learn about 12 different countries and other minor states (Andorra, Vatican City, Luxemburg, etc). We'll practice the different languages of each country. This course is not intended to be a language course, rather language is used to enhance the students understanding of the culture.

We'll also explore European Union's purpose and its role as Europes central government. Students will engage in independent thinking and creative learning, and be asked to participate in discussion in each lesson.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have studied European history, German history, humanities, and art history at the graduate level. Last year I had the privilege of living in Europe and visited many of the countries we will discuss in our camp. I'll use photos from my travels to create a more immersive 'travel' experience, and can answer students questions on modern European culture while providing historical context.
