Class Experience

Welcome to Geography and World Cultures - Eastern Hemisphere. We will be learning about Africa and Southwest Asia in this 10 week class.

Class time is structured similarly across all the Geography and World Cultures classes I offer. This is to provide consistency for learners while still introducing fun new learning activities through their weekly projects.

Learners can expect:
5-10 minutes warm-up
35 minute lecture including discussions, slides and video clips
5-10 minute "beyond the classroom" learning assignment provided

Ideally, learners need to have completed Geography Intro (Part 1) live or via a flexible option to participate fully in this class. Courses 2-5 can be taken in any order.

1- Welcome and Physical Geography of Northern Africa and Southwest Asia
2- History of Ancient Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt
3- History of the birthplace of three religions and history of Muslim Empires
4- Culture, Government and Economics of Northern Africa and Southwest Asia
5- Physical Geography of South Saharan Africa and history of African Cultures and Empires
6- The impact of Colonialism on Africa, the transatlantic slave trade, the road to independence and the Rwandan Genocide
7- Political change, economics and culture of Western Africa
8- Political change, economics and culture of Eastern Africa
9- Africa today - Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and Rwanda
10- Class Closure with review game

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a teacher with global experience who has been teaching Geography on Outschool for over 2 years. I have lived and taught in 3 different countries. I'm excited about the opportunity to share my love of cultures and geography with learners. I'm an enthusiastic teacher and plan my classes to include practical educational experiences.

As a youth worker and project-based educator by training (Master's Degree) and experience, a lover of history and a voracious reader, this seemed like the perfect fit for me. I have over 10 years experience bringing complex (and frankly sometimes boring) topics to life for learners ages 11-18.

In addition to having my Master’s degree I have a personal interest in Geography and History and working with marginalized groups, including underserved youth in the UK, Rwandan refugees (and survivors of the 1994 genocide) and the youth in public housing communities in the US. I have travelled extensively worldwide and lived in different cultures taking my Geographical understanding beyond the textbook. I have the research skills from my Master’s to do ethical and complete research to go beyond the “classic history” to find out the real story by using texts that include BIPOC authors. I have the experience and knowledge to handle questions and these subjects in an age appropriate, historically accurate and sensitive way.

For one time and multi-week classes I provide a 10% discount (please contact me for discount) for:
Returning students from my previous classes
Outschool teacher's children
Siblings who both register for the same class
