In this 5-day camp, students will learn how to create an intricate world for their own stories or games. This class is a good fit for writers who enjoy creating fantasy, or science fiction, or even historical or contemporary story worlds. This intensive camp will give students the tools they need to create a genuine, immersive story world for their readers. This course will cover how to create appropriate and compelling geography, weather, physics and time, technologies, food and culture,...
Students will learn the elements all writers and game creators must use to create believable and dependable story worlds.
Mrs. Akins is a published author of several books including one novel and several narrative biographies. She is a certified teacher in the state of Florida and has been teaching for more than 30 years. The only thing she is more passionate about than writing is teaching kids how much fun it is to write.
Learners will want to use the provided worksheets to create their own story world. However, homework is not required to stay up with the class. The learner can do as much or as little as they like. Worksheets will be provided as guides to help the writer flesh out their story world on their own time at their own pace.
Students will be provided with a digital copy of the day's lesson worksheets. Students may want to bring a pen and notebook to class but taking notes on their devices or computers is also appropriate. We will be doing a bit of map-making so a sketchbook or other types of drawing implements may be desirable.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
4 hours 10 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
We may use examples from YouTube to illustrate or model some concepts. Mrs. Akins will use PowerPoint and share her screen.
