Description
Class Experience
In this workshop, students will develop their story idea, character, setting and plot. Then they'll start writing their part of the story by writing in their unique character's voice, describing something about the character's life before the big inciting incident happens. To end the workshop, I'll give them a plan for going forward, teaching them the easiest way to work with a friend to write and finish their novel!
I have over twenty years of experience teaching kids and adults in an empowering and uplifting manner. I'm a published and acclaimed novelist, I have a journalism degree and a Masters in Fine Arts in Writing for Children and Young Adults from one of the top colleges in this field - Vermont College of Fine Arts. Also, I worked as the first curriculum director of WriteGirl LA and developed the organization's multi-sensory and interactive approach to writing. I understand how sensitive the creative process can be, and I honor every one of my student's efforts. My goal is always to make my students feel more joyful and empowered by using their own unique voice to tell stories.
Just write as much as you can! And laugh! Have so much fun with your friend that you'll want to write another book and another and another.
Bring a strange object to the workshop as well as something that smells or has a scent and paper and markers.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
No assessment, but I'm happy to read a few pages and tell you everything I love about your writing.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
We will use Canva with pictures to help the students think up character, setting and story ideas. Make sure that your student and their friend sign up separately and have their own computers.
I will give them a few pages of brainstorming experiments to work on with their friend before the workshop starts so they arrive with some ideas.
