Welcome to "Working with Words," a dynamic literacy enrichment course tailored specifically for early English language learners aged 6 to 11. I understand that every child learns at their own pace, which is why I'm open to accommodating older students who may benefit from this nurturing environment, provided their English proficiency and learning needs align with the course's objectives. In this multisensory course, we focus on empowering your child with essential literacy skills through a variety of interactive methods. Our primary goal is to build a foundation in handwriting, decoding, spelling, phonics, and reading—all while fostering a love for words! During your trial lesson, I conduct a personalized assessment to gauge your child's current literacy level and specific needs. This allows us to tailor our instruction effectively. Patience and attentive listening are at the heart of our approach as we guide your child on their journey toward literacy success. Each lesson is thoughtfully structured. We begin with a brief oral reinforcement of common phrases and words, helping students connect visual letters and words with their sounds. This foundational step sets the stage for sound recognition and writing practice. Throughout the course, students will have weekly sight words. We prioritize reviewing these words thoroughly before moving on to new material, ensuring mastery at each stage. We strive to reinforce material through discussion, phonetics, reading, and writing. To support our handwriting instruction, we recommend using a three lined handwriting tablet; however, I can provide a printed version from the Fundations curriculum if needed. Our curriculum draws on high-quality materials from McGraw Hill Wonders, providing material that captivates young learners. Additionally, for students needing extra spelling practice, assignments from Spelling Connections will be available. Join me in this exciting adventure where every lesson is a step toward becoming confident, capable readers and writers! Here is an example of the weekly topics and themes covered in the lessons. If your learner is assessed at level 1 you will join class at level 1, unit 1. We will cover at level phonics, topic oriented site words, spelling words, handwriting, and reading selections. A similar format will be followed for various levels. Each lesson will cover a topic. For example, ⇢ Week 1 : Level 1, Unit 1 / "At School" (short /a/) ⇢ Week 2: Level 1, Unit 1 / "Where I Live" (short /i/) ⇢ Week 3: Level 1, Unit 1/ "Our Pets" ( l - blends sounds) ⇢ Week 4: Level 1, Unit 1 / "Let’s Move" (r- blends, s-blends sounds)
