Class Experience

**This class is meant for students who are not yet writing sentences independently. Students should know the majority of their letter sounds and how to write their letters. Early Elementary Writer's Workshop is a better fit for students who can already write a sentence without much support** I ask that students keep their camera on for the majority of class. Please reach out ahead of time if this will not work for your child.

Each day I will teach an interactive mini-lesson at the beginning of class highlighting what we will be working on that is relevant to our current topic. After the mini-lesson, students will work on applying that skill in their drawings and writing. This class will be very individualized to support each student and I will challenge them at their current level. The focus of each week of class are listed below but is subject to change based on students. Most classes we will share our work from the day at the end of class. This class will run between 20-25 minutes each meeting based on student's focus.

Weeks One and Two: Students will work on writing a sentence on their own. We will continue to review how every sentence needs a capital letter, spaces and a period. We will also work on trying to hear more sounds in the words we are writing which I will model for students. I will start by providing a lot of support but will try to move students towards being more independent as these two weeks progress. Students will still draw a picture to go with their sentence each day.

Week Three: Students will write their first short story with a beginning, middle and end! We will brainstorm topics and will all work on writing about the same topic such as "swimming" or "playing at the playground". Even though we are all writing about the same topic every student will be writing different sentences because it is their own creation.

Week Four: Students will write a personal narrative story on a topic of their own choice. We will again brainstorm topics and foucs on having a clear sequence of events.

Week Five: Students will write a response based on a different story each day. I will ask a question based on the story and students will orally convey their thoughts before they try to write a sentence on their own based on the topic. We will keep working on all the sentence basics we have been learning.

Week Six: This week will be the same as week Four. All students will write about a new topic and will be encouraged to expand their writing.
