This class will teach students what it is like to work on a real freight railroad. During our lessons we will join Trainman John as he conducts, engineers and takes us through his daily routine. John is an FRA certified conductor and engineer of Seaview Railroad in North Kingstown, RI. John will welcome us into his world of working on a freight train. He created videos just for this class, just for us! Our lessons include: A teacher led video lesson Watching and learning from Trainman John Virtual field trips to see trains 3D models to view Interactive character games to help retain facts from the lessons A fun, fine motor skills step by step teacher led train craft video with each lesson Lesson One: Safety, the most important aspect of working on a train A brief history of railroading Lesson Two: The cars that can be seen on a freight train, what they are called and what they are used for. Students will have an inside view of what it is like to work on a real freight railroad. Students will learn what conductors and engineers do and will get creative with their own train craft.

The Importance of Safety on the Railroad
Let's meet Trainman John and see what it's like to work on a real railroad!
What does it mean to be safe on a railroad and why is it important?
We will cover the brief history of the railroad and create a fun, fine motor skills train craft.
We will take a virtual field trip to look at trains, play a fun memory game, and an interactive character game to help retain what we have learned in our lesson.
Watch and follow along with the teacher to make a fun train craft.
Lesson 2:
Daily routines of a conductor and freight train cars
Let's learn about the different types of cars that can be seen on freight trains and what those cars are used for.
What are the daily routines of a freight train conductor?
We will explore a 3D model of a train that students can turn and move, take our fun interactive quiz and play a memory game.
Watch and follow along with the teacher to make a fun train craft.
Lesson 3:
Drive that train!
What is it like to drive a freight train?
Let's take a look at the engineer and talk about taking care of train.
We will look at another 3D train model that students can turn and move, visit train and railway museums in virtual fieldtrips, take our fun knowledge builder interactive quiz and play the fun memory game.
Watch and follow along with the teacher to make a fun train craft.
Lesson 4:
Tracks and Wildlife
Let's learn about railroad tracks and problems that can happen with those tracks.
What kind of wildlife makes its home on and near the tracks?
We will explore train tracks on a virtual field trip, take our interactive quiz and play the fun memory game.
Watch and follow along with the teacher to make a fun train craft.

Parental Guidance
Adults may need to assist children in various aspects of the craft each week. Students wil be using scissors with some crafts.
Supply List
Students will need the following materials for the train crafts: Week One: 1. Sponge or sponges cut into 3 rectangles measuring about 3 inches by 5 inches for each rectangle 2. 3 colors of paint on 3 plates for dipping sponges in 3. A large piece of paper or several pieces of paper for child to stamp sponge painting onto Week Two: 1. Printable PDFs from the Classroom 2. 4 Q-tips 3. 4 different colors of paint Week Three: 1. Printable PDFs from Classroom 2. Four toilet paper rolls 3. Paint, several colors 4. Paint brushes 5. 8 pieces of yarn cut into 6 inch pieces 6. Glue Week Four: 1. 4 empty toilet paper rolls 2. piece of toilet paper or a tissue 3. 12 milk bottle tops or large buttons 4. colorful paints 5. Paint brush 6. glue 7. 4 pipe cleaners
