1-2 hours per week. Every week, each student will have a spelling list of 20 words and 5 written activities to choose from. They will choose 3 activities to turn in by midnight on the Friday before our class on Monday. Expect approximately 30 minutes of work 3 times per week.Assessment
While we will include quizzes, online spelling tests, and several Spelling Bees, this is not a graded class. Course Completion Certificate available upon request.Grading

English, Spelling There is no prerequisite requirement for this course. Spelling and teaching spelling has always fascinated me. Learning words that were "much too hard" was something I really enjoyed as a kid. As I dug through the rules and the phonics to teach my own kids spelling, I was inspired and encouraged by so many who had come before me. Spelling is just a code, and with a few tricks...that code can be revealed even to the most reluctant learner. In this Spelling Component of my 3Rs Series - 3rd - 5th Grade class, we will meet for 15 weeks. With exceptions to the Live classes falling on the weeks of Labor Day and Columbus Day, these two classes will be Video Classes posted to our Outschool Classroom so that your family can make the most of those holidays and still get the work done at your convenience. A full syllabus will be available on the first day of class for enrolled students. So you are able to see the breadth of our semester I will include approximate dates and plans for the semester. Please, make sure to reference the Outschool Classroom Page for final assignments. All students will be assessed for their own level of competency and will be given spelling words lists to suit their personal level. As a class, we will begin working toward learning the phonograms and rules that help them to decode English words. After the first class, each class will follow a similar pattern Review Quiz Phonograms New Lesson Spelling Game Students will create their own spelling rules dictionary during our lesson time. Each week, each student will have a spelling list of 20 words and 5 written activities to choose from. They will choose 3 activities to turn in by midnight the day before our class. They will take their personalized Spelling Test online. I will create the lists and provide the links. Our schedule below will be filled in with dates in each section. Supply List
Students will need a dedicated spelling notebook as we will be creating a semester-long spelling rules dictionary. The Dictionary will contain handouts and so the notebook will need to have a loose-leaf or pocket component. Index Cards, while not required would be very helpful.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I believe that we can learn anything and everything…with a few tools, and the ability to lay down our fears and try.
As a kid, I moved a lot. By the time I was 14 years old, I’d been to or through 42 states. I understand that “displacement” that people feel right now…that “loss of connection.” I believe that I homeschooled my own kids for 16 years to help alleviate that disconnectedness for them.
When my dad finally changed careers, he got “us” into Technology, and convinced me that I could teach. At 17 years old, I taught a group of men my father’s age how to use an Accounting Software that my father had programmed. It was terrifying…right up until I discovered that he had been right.
Nowadays, I teach a lot of things; English, Drama, Math…but behind every lesson is the desire to help people connect and overcome their fears. Life is hard. It’s hard when you are big, and in some ways, it’s even harder when you are small and other people make your decisions for you. It becomes easier when you realize that you are not alone…and that you really can do things that you didn’t realize that you could do.
This is a brand new school year with no mistakes in it. Let's see what amazing things we can accomplish, together.
