Class Experience

Students will improve their spelling by working on words developmentally appropriate for their level.

Led by a certified, UVA trained teacher, students will be tested to find their level and given words that fit their needs. We'll use Words Their Way or Word Study, "an approach to spelling instruction that moves away from a focus on memorization. The approach reflects what researchers have discovered about the alphabetic, pattern, and meaning layers of English orthography."

If traditional spelling approaches have not worked for your child, Word Study may be a great fit!

Schedule:
Monday: Spelling test to determine level
Tuesday: Introduce word sort/Games
Wednesday: Sorting Games
Thursday: Word Writing Assessment

Students will be given an assignment after each class that will take no more than 20 minutes to complete.

Welcome!
I am passionate about instilling a love of reading in children through sharing engaging, high interest texts. The classes I teach are literacy based, and I also offer reading assessments to help parents have a better understanding of their child's reading level and strategies to support them.
I have ten years teaching experience at the elementary level and my Masters in Reading Education from UVA and am certified to teach readers from K-12. I ran the CETA (Changing Education through the Arts) program by the Kennedy Center, at my school and find great value in arts integration.
I believe children should feel that they are valued members of a class in order to do their best learning. Classes should be engaging, interactive and social, especially in a virtual format.
I have two little guys at home and we love to bake, go on nature walks, and we just learned about Geocaching! Oh, and I'm a Penn Stater at heart- We Are!
