Hi! Thank you for your interest in this course! This course will be a review of all letter sounds in 8 weeks. This is a chance for students to increase their fluency, accuracy and confidence in reading CVC words. My teaching is aligned with the Science of Teaching Reading, and I believe in showing students the value in giving their best effort and learning from their mistakes. We will have a consistent class routine, and the content will build on itself with each class. We will follow the gradual release model, so students will watch me read or spell a word, we will do it all together, and then they will do it on their own. Throughout the course, we will have a consistent spiral-review to ensure mastery of every skill. Each class will have a consistent structure with four main focuses. - Phonological awareness - This has children practice hearing, identifying and manipulating each sound in a word to increase their ability to blend sound together when reading a word or segment sounds to spell a word. A students phonological awareness skills are a key component in learning to be a fluent reader, and it is a key indicator of their future success in reading. - High Frequency Words - These are the words that do not follow a phonetic pattern that the students have learned yet, but it is a very common word. These words are taught as a whole word, and each letter and sound in the word is explicitly taught. -Decoding - will be the next skill that is discussed. I will discuss the letters and patterns that we will be working on in that class. We will read the letter sound in isolation, in words and in sentences. This will be done through a slide show. - Spelling will be the last portion of each class. Students will use a dry erase board or paper to spell along with me, while we practice apply the sounds with have previously discussed to their writing.
