US Grade Kindergarten - 1
In this pirate-themed math class, students will work together to reach the buried treasure before the pirates by solving addition and subtraction (within 10) word problems. At the beginning of class, the students and teacher will have a discussion about the topic(s) of the week so the teacher can assess the students’ prior knowledge of the subject. Throughout the class, the teacher will introduce and teach the topic(s) using the “I Do, We Do, You Do” method. This instructional method starts with the teacher giving an example, followed by the teacher and student solving a problem or completing a task together, then finally, the student is given a problem or task to complete on his/her own, with support given as necessary. ~What should learners and their grown-ups expect from this class? *Students will take turn rolling a virtual dice to advance along the pirate-themed board game. When the student lands on a space on the game board, the teacher will click on the space to open a word problem. All word problems will be either addition or subtraction within 10. *The teacher will read the word problem aloud to the class. The teacher will allow the student(s) to lead the problem-solving, while providing support and teach strategies as necessary to help each student reach the correct answer. *At the end of the game, the students must answer the "treasure question" before they can dig up the treasure. *The board game contains 24 questions, so a second round can be played if time allows. ~What are some examples of the word problems from this class? *The pirate captain counts his treasure for 4 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening. How many total hours does he count his treasure every day? *Dave the Brave took 10 minutes to scrub the deck. Jean the Mean took 6 minutes to scrub the deck. How many more minutes did Dave take than Jean? *3 fish swam in the sea. some new fish joined the school. there are 10 fish now. How many new fish joined the school? *Oh no! The pirates forgot which island has their buried treasure! There are 9 islands on the map. They already searched 6 islands. How many islands are left to search? Throughout the entire class, many discussion questions will be asked in order to promote critical thinking, to help the students to relate to the lesson and to introduce each topic within the lesson. This class is best for any student ages 5 to 8, or those students looking to learn, review and practice solving a variety of addition and subtraction (wihtin 10) word problems. Students should be familiar with the concepts or topics of the class beforehand, but we will learn and review in class. The class materials will be presented via Google Slides and screen shared on the teacher's screen only. Learners will need nothing outside of the Outschool Zoom classroom. Students may need to print materials prior to the start of class. Please check the parental guidance and materials sections.
