US Grade 5
In this ongoing course, students will solve word problems to learn, review and practice all crucial and required topics of fifth grade math, including multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, algebra and more. We will be practicing 1-step, 2-step and multi-step word problems. Throughout the class, the teacher will introduce and teach the topic(s) using the “I Do, We Do, You Do” method. This instructional method starts with the teacher giving an example, followed by the teacher and student solving a problem or completing a task together, then finally, the student is given a problem or task to complete on his/her own, with support given as necessary. All classes will include instruction, practice, and application problems (word problems). Homework and review material can be provided upon request. Because this class is ongoing, students can enroll at any time. Classes do not build upon each other. The topics will rotate according to the schedule below: Week of Sep. 2: Multi-Digit Multiplication Week of Sep. 9: Multi-Digit Multiplication Week of Sep. 16: Long Division Week of Sep. 23: Rounding Week of Sep. 30: Estimating Week of Oct. 7: Comparing and Ordering Numbers Week of Oct. 14: Add Fractions Week of Oct. 21: Subtract Fractions Week of Oct. 28: Multiply Fractions Week of Nov. 4: Divide Fractions Week of Nov. 11: Add and Subtract Decimals Week of Nov. 18: Multiply Decimals Week of Nov. 25: Divide Decimals Week of Dec. 2: Order of Operations Week of Dec. 9: Volume Week of Dec. 16: Area Week of Dec. 23: Coordinate Plane Week of Dec. 30: Perimeter Week of Jan. 6: Patterns and Relationships Week of Jan. 13: Interpreting Data Week of Jan. 20: Comparing and Ordering Fractions Week of Jan 27: Equivalent Fractions Week of Feb. 3: Understanding Percentages Week of Feb. 10: Mixed Operations Week of Feb. 17: Angles Week of Feb. 24: Converting Units Once topics have been cycled through, we will begin again. (There will always be a new set of word problems in each class. A learner who stays enrolled on an ongoing basis will not be presented with the same word problems as any previous class, even if the topic is the same as a previous class.) Occasionally, new topics will be added to the rotation, based on learner's skills and interests. Throughout the entire class, many discussion questions will be asked in order to promote critical thinking, help the students to relate to the lesson, and introduce each topic within the lesson. This class is best for any student ages 9 to 11, or those students looking to practice the 5th grade math objectives or skills. Students should be familiar with the concepts or topics of the class beforehand. We will review and practice in class. The class materials will be presented via Google Slides and shared on the teacher's screen only. Learners will need nothing outside of the Outschool Zoom classroom.
