Class Experience

US Grade 1
In this ongoing class, students will be given a grade-appropriate word problem. For the first grade word problems, students will be using the operations of addition or subtraction. First, the teacher will read the word problem and then will read it a second time to highlight key words. Students will be given ten minutes to independently solve the problem. For the last ten minutes, students will be offered the opportunity to share their work. At the end of the session, the teacher will share out the various strategies that can be used to solve the problem. The weekly problem will be sent ahead of the session so students can preview and start their work ahead of the session. This may help students become more confident when sharing with their classmates.
Week One (Wednesday, 7/5) - Addition Word Problem
Week Two (Wednesday, 7/12) - Subtraction Word Problem
Week Three (Wednesday, 7/19) - Mixed Word Problems With Addition and Subtraction
Learning Goals
Students will be able to solve addition and subtraction word problems. They will also build their confidence in sharing the strategies they used with their classmates.

Hello, I am so excited for the opportunity to work with your child. As a new mom, I have decided to step away from the classroom but I wanted to continue to use my passion for teaching young students.

I graduated from the University of Hartford in 2014 after studying Elementary and Special Education. I received my Master’s in Special Education from Fordham University in 2016. I have been teaching full-time since 2014 in various grades - from Kindergarten to 3rd Grade. I have experience with remote teaching, so I will be able to create an engaging experience for your child during our virtual session.

While I do offer some small-group classes, my favorite thing to do on Outschool is 1:1 tutoring - both in ELA and Math. I love teaching foundational reading and math skills. For example, I enjoy guided reading lessons that teach students how to decode words and better comprehend the story. I also enjoy teaching sight words through games. In Math, I enjoy teaching all operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) through visuals and manipulatives. It is crucial that students understand the foundational skills so they are set up for future success.

Having classroom experience, I will be able to assess your child to see what their individual needs are and how to best support them. An example of an assessment would be a Running Record - which helps to determine your child’s reading level. I will communicate with you after each lesson and discuss the next steps we will work on to help your child succeed.

*Most of my tutoring schedule is done by request, so please send me a message and we can coordinate a time :)
