Word Genius: Have Fun Expanding Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Skills
What's included

30 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
US Grade 3 - 5
In this fast-paced 30-minute ongoing course, learners will strengthen reading comprehension and vocabulary, using familiar topics and sometimes music to engage and help facilitate real-world connections so that they are better able to communicate their ideas, even abstract ideas orally and in writing. The learners will learn higher-level vocabulary words and figurative language phrases, and these words and phrases will be integrated into plays of familiar topics/topics of relevance which may include books, sports, holidays, good citizenship/responsibilities, pets, music, social studies, travel, outer space, science, nature, hobbies, games, talents, and other topics of interest. After learning these words/phrases including seeing a visual representation of these words and phrases and reading how they can be used in sentences, the learners will then enhance their understanding and oral abilities by reading them in a play. Learners can then show what they have learned by using their newfound vocabulary in a story or sentences of their own, either verbally or written. The class is learner centered, and my style is relaxed. I strongly encourage learner participation because the knowledge is best retained by the learner when they provide feedback, both orally and in writing. The writing will be done interactively. However, a journal is highly recommended if the learner wants to keep a record of their writings, but it is not required. The learners will interact via discussions, slides, and, occasionally via music clip from YouTube as it relates to the words in the lesson. Our session topics will be learner directed, based on group interest which may include current events/happenings.
Learning Goals
Students will increase their vocabulary weekly with academic words which will strengthen their ability to communicate orally and in writing.
