In this class, students will gain an understanding of English morphology (the study of the forms of words: bases, prefixes and suffixes) that will broaden their vocabulary, reading skills, and understanding of how English spelling works.
I have had extensive professional development in the ideas presented in this class, and have seven years of experience teaching this content in a classroom setting.
Familiarity with basic phonics/decoding, ability to read one-syllable words is recommended. This class is a great way to take those readers to the next level as adding prefixes and suffixes increases complexity. ("play" vs. "replaying")Students will need pencil and paper on which to do their word building. I would recommend a notebook where they can keep all their work over the course of their time in this class, as they may also choose to keep lists of prefixes, bases and suffixes that we work with.
