This activity requires students to handle nuts or seeds, as well as a choice of nut butter. Therefore, learners may need to use certain alternatives if they are allergic to nuts, nut butters, or seeds. This class may not be suited to all learners due to the risk of allergies Here is a list of alternatives the learner can use:

Nut Butters:
Peanut butter
Sunflower butter
Almond Butter
Cashew Butter
Hazelnut Butter

Seed/nuts:
Sunflower seeds
Regular bird seed
Plain cheerios
Corn
Raisins
Dried fruit

This class also required the students to use either a butter knife or rubber spatula to apply the nut butter onto the pinecone. Parent supervision will be required if the learner chooses to use a butter knife for application.
