Homework
1-2 hours per week. Learners can expect to spend time beyond classroom time creating and sharing work from the weekly prompts and exercises. Learners will also be asked to watch teacher created and curated videos and work together to gather reference materials.Class Experience
In this six week asynchronous learning program learners will be guided through the ins and outs of working with watercolours to create both sketchbook studies and a finished painting. Using a combination of discussion, demonstration, research, and games, we will explore techniques, types of watercolours, papers, and grounds. We will research various modern artists who use watercolours and the techniques they use. Techniques we will cover include: Wash, Wet on wet, Resist, Drybrush, Desaturation , Lifting, Painting direct Drawing experience will be helpful but not required. Learners can expect teacher demonstrations, in class exercises, and links to reference for extended learning opportunities. Learner participation in class is vital to success in this program. Along with the teacher, learners will share research results, inspiration and free use reference images. Art critique and peer engagement will be a weekly expectation. Learners can expect for high engagement from the teacher and while live meetings are not built into the course work, learners can request live meetings to help with learning. Week 1: Watercolour types, materials, papers, uses Week 2: Inspiration, reference materials, plein air and planned paintings Week 3: colour theory, colour mixing, value scales, colour combinations Week 4: Get out and paint! - Watercolours on the go Week 5 & Week 6 : Start to Finish - creating a wonderful watercolour painting. Learners in this program should have a keen interest in watercolours and art technique. This is not a step-by-step program, learners will come away from this program with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue watercolours beyond the classroom.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
For a portion of this program learners will be encouraged to collect some research/data/images. As such, parental guidance may be required to search out an artist online or from your own printed resources. An example of this could be (find a book cover in your home that shows a particular artistic technique). I encourage parents/caregivers to talk to your learners about their studies and encourage exploration whenever possible.
Supply List
Learners will want to have : a set of watercolour paints (tube or pan) watercolour paper (140lb) Pencil and eraser Paper towels Table salt Optional: Ruler Low tac masking tape Drawing board An example shopping list will be available in the classroom upon enrollment with specific recommendations.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Sharon is a professional fine artist/illustrator who has been teaching studio curriculum on Outschool for 5 years . Prior to bringing her art and art technique programs to Outschool she taught in schools, community centers, and private studios dating back to 2006.
Sharon has illustrated FOUR published children’s books, as well as a few that never made it to print. Check out her newest picture book "Refin Builds A Rocket Ship".
When she isn’t sharing her passion for the arts with learners on Outschool Sharon is creating work in as many different mediums as she can get her hands on.. Sharon's classes are rooted in Reggio philosophies and strives to equip learners with the tools they need to be successful in AND outside the classroom.
