Wonderful and Weird Nature!

This 12-part science class is great for learners who love nature, even the weird parts! We will explore the amazing, odd, and sometimes disturbing ways that organisms feed themselves, defend themselves, finish their life cycles, and more.

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Students will gain knowledge of scientific concepts and vocabulary while getting grossed out! Truth can be stranger than fiction, and in this 12-part class, students will hear some very strange but true nature stories. Some of the subjects we will touch on include parasitism, regeneration, and slime! We will explore how and why these bizarre and gruesome abilities or traits allow organisms to defend themselves, reproduce, feed themselves, or complete their lifecycles.

Since the classes are stand-alone and do not build, learners are welcome to come and go as they please.
Topics repeat at the end.

Week 1: Hematophagy: Animals who use blood as a food source!
Week 2: Colorful Blood: Red, blue, and orange blood!
Week 3: Toxoplasma Gondii: This parasite can influence behavior!
Week 4: Extremophiles: What are the organisms that can live in EXTREME conditions?
Week 5: Regeneration and Cryptobiosis: Animals that can regrow limbs and even organs or come back from the dead!
Week 6: Crypsis and Mimicry: Some animals use trickery to catch prey and avoid becoming prey!
Week 7: Adaptations: Dramatic changes to survive!
Week 8: Defense Mechanisms: Strange ways animals defend themselves against danger!
Week 9: Symbiosis: Parasitism, mutualism, and commensalism!
Week 10: Mind Control: How do some organisms control other organisms.
Week 11: Eating Habits: You wouldn't want these creatures as dinner guests!
Week 12: Slime: One of nature's most versatile substances!
