Wonder is a story about a ten-year-old boy who lives in Manhattan and who has a rare physical deformity. It is told from the points of view of multiple characters: primarily the deformed Auggie himself, but also his sister, his friends, and his enemies. Having so many perspectives, it allows readers to understand how Auggie's entire community struggles to learn compassion and empathy. While interacting with someone who looks different from them, these other characters discover that Auggie...
I have chosen this novel because I think the themes are perfect for kids and will foster great discussion and thought provoking questions. I love teaching reading and I create a relaxed environment in my classes in which students feel comfortable to share their thoughts and ideas. I also want them to be excited about coming to class, so I work hard to create activities that will keep them engaged while learning important reading comprehension skills.
1 file available upon enrollmentStudents will need a copy of the novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Upon enrollment you will receive the first week's handouts. Students are expected to do the assigned readings at home. We will complete the majority of the assignments during class. (I may assign a small amount of work at home to finish if needed.) This is a great book for a class literature unit. It is 310 pages, so it is important that the student keep up with the weekly reading so we can complete the class in 8 weeks. This shouldn't be hard because it is a fun novel that keeps the readers attention. I have created class activities I think the students will enjoy too. I will send the handouts out at the beginning of each week.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
