Description
Class Experience
Students will learn about the elements of writing such as vocabulary, point of view, setting, plot, and character development. Additionally students will have a platform to express their thoughts and opinions on the storyline and the experiences of the characters. This discussion group will help the students craft their critical thinking skills and learn to really think about the story and the characters
I read this book with my (then) twelve-year old afternoon student who had been exposed to bullying at her school. We formed a discussion group with several of her friends. This is an important topic and an excellent book!
Homework for the class includes reading several chapters and reflecting on the discussion points in order to be a good participant in the discussion. Depending on how quickly the individual student can read, I would expect about 2 hours per week to be dedicated to the reading and reflecting. Students are asked to identify any vocabulary that is new or interesting for the discussion as well. The book is 320 pages

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Participation is the goal in this class. It is a discussion group that is outfitted with forming and expressing opinions, acknowledging the technical aspects of the writing, and reading for a deeper meaning.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
