In this 7 week book club we will discuss the book, "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio, and we will be learning essential reading skills. We will meet twice weekly for 7 weeks. The class organization will correspond to the 8 parts of the book.

In this class we will read and discuss the highly popular book Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. We will meet 2X a week for 7 weeks. The discussions will allow us to delve into literature elements such as; comprehension, character, theme, plot development, etc. We will also discus the precepts within the book, looking at themes such as: the importance of kindness; perseverance; bravery, etc. Each class will have background elements such as videos, pictures, and realia to increase the comprehension of the story. Week One: August Part 1 Class 1: Watch Natalie Merchant's song "Wonder" that inspired the book. Discuss vocabulary and background for the first reading assignment. Assign pages 1 - 26 Class 2: Discuss pages 1-26. Discuss vocabulary, precepts and background for the next reading assignment. Assign pages 27 - 50. Week Two: August Part 1 Class 1: Discuss pages 27-50. Discuss vocabulary, precepts, and background for the next reading assignment. Assign pages 51-80. Class 2: Discuss pages 51-80. Discuss vocabulary, precepts and background for the next reading assignment. Introduce part 2: Via. Assign pages 81-117. Week Three: Via/ Summer Class 1: Discuss pages 81-117. Culminating activity: Make a mini poster using a quote that was given in the book. Each class will be presented with Google slides. We will discuss vocabulary through slides, games, and art. The precepts in the book will be discussed during class and the background information will be in forms of music, pictures, and realia.
Learning Goals
This is one of those books that you will treasure. It is uniquely presented through different relatable characters' points of view that enhance the meaning of the story. The heartwarming themes really put you into the story and help to make it your own.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
The class does involve watching some Youtube videos. I can provide the links for preview if you would like. There are some difficult topics that are mentioned in the books such as; a pet dying; bullying; death of a grandparent, etc. We will discuss these topics and the characters' responses as they are presented in the book.
