In this class we will read and discuss the highly popular book Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. We will meet 2X a week for 7 weeks. The discussions will allow us to delve into literature elements such as; comprehension, character, theme, plot development, etc. We will also discus the precepts within the book, looking at themes such as: the importance of kindness; perseverance; bravery, etc. Each class will have background elements such as videos, pictures, and realia to increase the comprehension of the story. Week One: August Part 1 Class 1: Watch Natalie Merchant's song "Wonder" that inspired the book. Discuss vocabulary and background for the first reading assignment. The precepts in the book will be discussed during class and the background information will be in forms of music, pictures, and realia.
Learning Goals
This is one of those books that you will treasure. It is uniquely presented through different relatable characters' points of view that enhance the meaning of the story. The heartwarming themes really put you into the story and help to make it your own.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
The class does involve watching some Youtube videos. I can provide the links for preview if you would like. There are some difficult topics that are mentioned in the books such as; a pet dying; bullying; death of a grandparent, etc. We will discuss these topics and the characters' responses as they are presented in the book.
