Class Experience

Students will enjoy rich, meaningful literature, and make connections between the characters in our book and their own lives.
Students will be able to identify strong literary writing techniques and apply them to their own writing.
Students will gain a deeper understanding of those who are different from ourselves, and the value of not judging a book by its cover.
Students will demonstrate their ability to view difficult situations from the perspectives of multiple characters.
I have been teaching upper-elementary age students for over 20 years, and leading young adults in book clubs is my expertise. I've helped countless students develop a love of reading with my ability to choose meaningful, thought-provoking novels. The experiences I've gained in the classroom for years will enhance the authenticity of this meaningful book club.
Students will read approximately 40 pages per week, as well as keep a journal and complete occasional assignments. The goal is to spend 1 hour per week meeting as a class, and 1-2 hours per week outside of class.
Students will need their own copy of Wonder, by R.J. Palacio, and a journal for writing.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learner progress will be assessed via informal evaluation, and parents can receive grades for assignments upon request.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Common Sense Media recommends this book for ages 10 and up.
