Class Experience

Not a boring old history lesson! In this two-day class, history is told through colourful and imaginative stories that are factual and fascinating. The focus isn’t on years and dates but sparking curiosity in your learners. Students will learn about and discuss six real female warriors from ancient and medieval history; Greek warrior Cynane, Queen Boudica, the Viking shield maiden Lagertha, Empress Matilda, Lady Fu Hao, and Joan of Arc. These women took up arms to defend themselves and their people and lived incredible lives!

I like to bring imagery to students so they can see, hear, smell and imagine that they have time-travelled to the period we are discussing. Possible topics include how these women learned to fight, the historical circumstances of their lives and the challenges they faced.

Day One will discuss the Greek warrior Cynane, Empress Matilda, and the Viking shield maiden Lagertha.

Day Two will discuss Queen Boudica, Lady Fu Hao, and Joan of Arc.

Feel free to join one class if it interests you more, or join both!

In a safe and supportive learning environment we will look at the at the lives and impacts these warrior women had on their countries and time periods. Each class will consist of a PowerPoint lecture, historical context to immerse us into the period we are discussing, and a guided or free discussion/question period after each warrior.

Learners will leave the class with a basic knowledge of each of these warrior women, their lives and the historical period they lived in, a handout summarizing the class, and a list of additional resources including books, podcasts, movies, and websites.

No prior knowledge is necessary, but if you have a fun history fact, even if its unrelated to the topic, please share it at the end of class!

Due to the nature of the class, no homework will be assigned.

A handout will be provided to engage your learner and direct their attention. It’s probably best to have a glance at it before the class begins, but not necessary.
