Class Experience

This course is part of a larger series of classes on African women in history. Each class will offer a look at the life, legacy and significance of one women from Africa. This series will also include Nzinga (Angola), Queen Nandi (South Africa), Kandake (Ethiopia) and Amina (Nigeria).

Nefertiti, queen of Egypt and wife of Akhenaton, is possibly Africa's most famous ancient queens. In this class we will learn the geography, life and biography of this famous queen.

This series will help students think of Africa in complex terms with regional, ethnic and historical differences rather than as a homogeneous concept. This class will provide a more diverse and complex narrative of history and compliment academic historical learning.

Learning Goals

Students will learn African geography and learn the concepts of shifting political borders. In each class after we learn about the biography, history and geography, we will have a brief discussion to help students develop critical thinking skills and learn to build arguments. Students will learn skills to base perspectives on evidence and also debate topics in ways that are respectful of multiple perspectives.

This course will introduce students to the concept of historical sources, microhistory and women's history through a singular case study of one African woman of prominence through history.

This class will also help students to understand the relationship between geography and history as we explore the Nile and its role in shaping Ancient Egyptian history.
