US Grade 4 - 6
This class is designed to expose students to a wide variety of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) topics and subjects, all through the lens of women who had a pioneering role in that area. It is also intended to show students the importance of making science an inclusive and welcoming community. In this spirit, this camp is open to everyone! Each day, students will learn about the life and contributions of a historical female character in the development of the modern world, and then work through one or more hands-on activities to explore this subject in more detail and gain an appreciation for their work. Day 1: We will be learning about Ada Lovelace, who developed the first algorithm. We will then use Scratch to create a variety of spirographs using different algorithms. Day 2: We will be learning about Edith Clarke's impact on Electrical engineering as we design and test our own circuits in TinkerCAD. Day 3: We will learn about Marie Tharp, a geologist and oceanographer, make maps, and build those maps in TinkerCAD. Day 4: We will learn about Rosalind Franklin and her contributions to the discovery of DNA's structure. We will then extract DNA from fruit using household materials! Day 5: We will learn about Sophie Germain's studies of elasticity and her contribution to engineering, especially buildings and bridges. Then, we will build a catapult.
Learning Goals
Students will be exposed to some of the many contributions women have made to STEM over the years and come away from camp with an understanding of why it is so important that these fields be an open and welcoming place for all types of people.
They will also learn basic concepts of coding, geology, biology, electronics and engineering.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
We will be using TinkerCAD and Scratch for several of the classes which are both online softwares. Students are allowed to use their own accounts or use our student account. If they use ours, they will need to put in their first name and last initial so they can save it and find it later.
On Day 4 (Week of Nov 7) there will be the use of rubbing alcohol/ isopropyl alcohol in class.
