US Grade 3 - 4
Teaching students to understand how to confidently state an opinion, but also back their opinion up with research is so important! This class is the perfect way for students to practice supporting their opinion with evidence, while collaboratively working with a team. Students will be assigned to either the affirmative or negative side of a book topic from books 1-3. For example: Should Harry Potter receive a consequence for flying his broom without permission? We will randomly select our topic, so your learner could join this class multiple times! This is the structure for our class: *mini lesson on debate and supporting our opinion with text evidence. *Collaborative time in monitored breakout rooms with teams *presentations from teams *collaborative time in breakout rooms with teams *rebuttal and summary from each team. There will be no *winner* as I want to promote this as a respectful learning experience, rather than just competing. Students need to have watched or read the first 3 books/movies in order to not get any spoilers. I will remind students not to spoil anything past that point.
Learning Goals
While working collaboratively as a team, students will use text evidence to support their opinion.
