Make some theatre magic! Learn acting and theatre skills in our inclusive Wizard School of Drama as we meet weekly for different dramatic arts activities and produce original plays in a unique magical world.

Class Experience

Anchor Standard: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
a. Create roles, imagined worlds, and improvised stories in a drama/theatre work.
b. Imagine and articulate ideas for costumes, props and sets for the environment and characters in a drama/theatre work.
c. Collaborate to determine how characters might move and speak to support the story and given circumstances in drama/theatre work.

a. Apply the elements of dramatic structure to a story and create a drama/theatre work.
b. Investigate how movement and voice are incorporated into drama/theatre work.

The plays are written specifically with the following Social Emotional Goals in mind:
1. Self-Awareness
The ability to recognize one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior and to assess one’s strengths and limitations.
1A Individual demonstrates an understanding of one’s emotions.
1B Individual identifies when help is needed and who can provide it.
1D Individual demonstrates knowledge of their own personal strengths, cultural and linguistic assets, and aspirations.

2. Self-Management
The ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations and to set and work toward personal and academic goals.
2A Individual demonstrates the skills to manage one’s emotions, thoughts, impulses and stress in constructive ways.
Jessica Gray earned a PhD in theatre from Louisiana State University, her MA in theatre from Florida State University, and her BA in theatre from the University of NC. She has been working with children and theatre for more than 20 years. She is the Artistic & Education Director The Imaginorium, which offers virtual summer and school break programs in Providence, Rhode Island (which they call "story-based theatre programs with a side of STEAM"). These camps are immersive role-playing opportunities for children to experience stories in a complete theatrical environment.
Homework Offered
Sometimes students want to make a prop or costume or continue writing outside of class. The amount of time a student spends on them will be completely up to them.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
The teacher will be paying close attention to learner participation through physical and verbal cues, interaction, and will ask direct questions to determine whether or not there is both comprehension and interest in a particular activity. Assessment will be ongoing.
Grades Offered
0Occasionally we may choose to make props or costumes. If we do, a suggested supply list will be sent to parents at least a week in advance. Students should also BYOW (bring your own wand) and dress in costume if possible to enhance the magic, but this is optional, of course.
Also, I strongly recommend you get a copy of "Imagine the Key" Book One of the the Rainbow Path" ,
While our Wizard Academy has many similarities to those in the Harry Potter books, the class will include less HP content moving forward because of the author’s public stance on transgender issues.
We are focused much more on the Rainbow Path.
I will provide links to the plays in digital form, but if students want to buy printed versions, they are available. The first play we are doing is available here:
