* please note: This class does not use a common core method of addition and subtraction- instead students tell me their methods and we work from there! this class is about financial literacy and even more importantly makes math fun!!! This one-time course will give students the chance to practice adding prices, with both dollar and cent amounts while shopping for their Hogwarts school supplies in Diagon Alley! This course will use a research-based method for instruction in math called the...
Students will learn how to add and subtract prices from a total budget by purchasing their Hogwarts' supplies at Diagon alley shops.
I am the absolute best teacher for this class because I am a HARRY POTTER NUT! I have read the Harry Potter series 9 times! I read the series as a child, read it as an adult for pleasure two times, and as a read a-loud for students in my class six times. I think that this is the PERFECT book to get students excited about learning. In addition, I am a MAT student at Johns Hopkins School of Education where I am focused on instructional practices! I know what kids need to become stronger mathematicians. I have taught math for 9 years from grades 2-10. I can give your students what they need and they will enjoy themselves!!
Some students will learn the financial skill of shopping!!
Students will receive a Google Doc when class starts! Students can print the document. However, they can also work from the document on scrap paper!
Students are assessed based on their final purchases and the calculations of their remaining budget.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
