Prepare for a magical learning adventure in this semester long cross curricular adventure. Learners become students at Wizard Academy, exploring topics such as Potions/Chemistry, Transfiguration/art, escape room challenges and more!

“Everything is Magic Until Science Proves It Otherwise” - Dare to Dream Theatre Wizard Academy Programming

Each session learners will take on the role of students at Wizard Academy, using their imaginations to explore academic subject through the lens of the Wizard’s World. 

Pre-program: Learners will receive a letter through the Classroom informing them of their acceptance into Wizard Academy and laying out the specific details, suggested apparel, and challenges for the semester. Each session will consist of on screen class time followed by an off screen challenge that can be completed by the learner on their own before the next session.

PRE-PROGRAM PREPARATION : choose your wand (make or bring a wand to class) and complete Sorting Adventure Escape Room to be placed into one of four houses or dorms: Arulean (teal/purple/copper represented by the element of water) Celosia (red/black/silver represented by the element of fire) Glennvaron (green/brown/bronze represented by the element of earth) Ilmari (blue/white/gold represented by the element of air)
 NOTE: Learners who do not complete the escape room in advance of the first session will be placed into a house/dorm randomly

Session 1: Welcome to Wizard Academy 
Learners meet each other and explore the virtual academy together before dividing into breakout rooms to get to know their dorm mates.

HOMEWORK: The Wizards Wand

Session 2: Charms & Spells
Learners will explore etymology of magical words from various books and movies (including Eragon, Harry Potter, Descendants, and more) before learning an improv dueling game and earning house points.
HOUSE CUP CHALLENGE: invent your own spell 
HOMEWORK: Discover your Patronus 

Session 3: Patronus
Learners will learn about their Patronus and create a rainbow reveal art project featuring their chosen patronus.
HOUSE CUP CHALLENGE: create a charm representing your patronus to add to your wand
HOMEWORK: 

Session 4: Potions
Learners will explore the states of matter and create a Wiggenweld Healing Potion (NOTE: supply list and amazon links will be provided in the classroom. 3 different slime making processes will be shared each using different ingredients so learners can choose which option to make)
HOUSE CUP CHALLENGE: potions practice. Use the scientific method to explore one of the potions provided in the potions room of the virtual academy potions room. 

Session 5: Care of Magical Creatures
After a brief review of research methods and a presentation featuring a couple mythical creatures, Learners will create a digital field guide page featuring their chosen creature.

Session 6: History of Magic 
Learners will compete in a jeopardy game to learn about and review notable names in the magical (literature) and non magical (Sciences and arts) world

Session 7: Study of non-wizard “magic”
Students will explore how non-wizards explain levitation using Magnets and currents.
HOUSE CUP CHALLENGE: 
Explore illusion and magic tricks. 

Session 8: Herbology 
Learners will create and plant an edible Mandrake treat and explore the uses of plants.

Session 9: Transfiguration
learners will use objects easily found around the house to transform them into another object and back again.
HOUSE CUP CHALLENGE:  

Session 10: Semester Celebration
Learners will celebrate a semester of adventure, enjoy wizard themed treats (recipes will be shared in the classrooms fir learners Tom make I need advance of class if they wish), complete a fast paced competition reviewing the academic topics explored through the semester. Learners will also discover their final House Point Status and receive their awards.

At the end of the session, winners of the House Cup will be awarded a $10 gift enrollment for a future class with Rachel.

Learning Goals
Learners are encouraged to participate in programming “in character” as much as possible. Together they will explore STEAM challenges through the lens of Wizard Academy, building team work, leadership, creative problem solving, and self confidence all while having fun working together to earn house points.

Supply List
NOTE: This class requires a significant list of supplies.

Materials use during sessions include: 
Scissors
Paint, crayons, markers, or colored pencils
Blank printer or sketchbook Paper
Cardstock
Black tempera or acrylic paint
Oil pastels (crayons work, but oil pastels work best)
Toothpick
Household “potions” ingredients (parent involvement requested to prep these materials and label with alternate names such as “truth serum” “wolfsbane” etc. list and links in classroom)
Pudding, rice crispy bar, chocolate melts, Oreo cookies

Suggested materials for optional out of class activities: 
Dowel or stick from outside
String, beads, gems, etc to decorate the wand
Ballpoint pen, brightly colored feather, hot glue (to create quill pen), thin width colorful craft duct tape or washi tape.
Air dry clay 
craft felt, scrapbook paper
Tall clear plastic cups
Colored craft sand and a small sand art bottle
Cream soda, whipped cream, butterscotch or caramel syrup
Misc arts and craft materials such as glitter glue, rhinestones, etc for daily creative challenges.
