Enter the world of imagination in this immersive interactive program. During each session learners will take on the role of students at Wizard Academy, using their imaginations to explore academic subject through the lens of the Wizard’s world. Wizard Academy: STEAM adventures takes a deep dive into a couple longer term science projects, self guided exploration between sessions through use of an interactive group field Guide. A significant list of suggested materials provided in the classroom features many science and art materials including heat sensitive paint or pigment, seeds, dirt, and common household acids and bases. If your learner does not wish to participate in the projects, they can still interact during the session as we learn about the topic. Session 1: Welcome to Wizard Academy Year 2 Learners will meet each other and work in small groups to earn house points by completing a google forms guided digital adventure challenging their logic, creativity, and collaboration. Some learners may know each other from a Previous Wizard Academy session, and others may be meeting for the first time! Session 2: Herbology (botany) SPRING: Learners will begin an ongoing study of plants as we plant and care for herb or flower seeds. Time will be reserved in each of the following sessions to observe and record the progress of the seedlings in their field notebook. SUMMER, WINTER, or FALL: Learners will learn about the life cycle of a plant while creating seed paper to plant in an indoor pot or outside in a garden during planting season. Session 3: Magical Creatures Learners will choose to make and study either a Bowtrickle or a Pygmy Puff. This session will involve creating one of these two "pets" and using imagination to develop the life cycle, environment, and food for the creature. BETWEEN SESSION PROJECT: Learners will begin an ongoing self guided study of magical creatures by creating a field notebook with a two page spread for each magical creature studied. We will begin this study together as we use a template/formate to learn about our first creature. Session 4: Arithmancy Learners will compete with classmates on Math and Logic games. (NOTE: this session will require switching between tabs and using the annotate function in zoom. It will be best enjoyed on a laptop or desktop computer as chromebooks and tablets don't always work well with interactive websites or with some zoom tools) Session 5: Transfiguration Learners will explore the properties of Thermochromatic paint or pigments by making a Color Changing Mug. (NOTE: Specific materials will be needed for this class. Links to suggested resources to purchase thermo pigment or thermo paint will be included in the classroom) Session 6: Alchemy Learners will explore types of rocks and fossils while we use beads and/or precious stones to create a piece of jewelry to wear or give as a gift. In the remaining time during the in class session, Learners are encouraged to show and share any precious stones or interesting rocks they might have on hand. (NOTE: Suggested project includes making a necklace or bracelet from gemstone or natural stone or shell beads) Session 7: Astronomy Learners will learn about constellations and the myths behind them while making a Constellation projector with objects found around the house. (A Suggested supply list will be included in the classroom) Session 8: Potions Learners will explore PH balance by making an edible potion and apply the scientific method to further explore Acids and Bases (NOTE: Learners will need the liquid from a boiled purple cabbage as well as a few other specific items included on a list that will be provided in the classroom. Specific instructions to prepare ingredients in advance will also be provided in the classroom.) Session 9: Wizard Sports During this fun session we will make no-bake healthy treats while learning about popular Wizard sports and exploring ways of playing the sport in the Non-magical world. Session 10: Inter House Competition Learners will work together to compete in a Game Show style competition. At the end of the session, winners will be awarded a $10 gift enrollment for a future class with Rachel.
