Winter Wonderland: How do Animals Survive in Winter? (With a Weekly Craft)

In this four week course, students will learn all about why it snows and what animals do during the winter (hibernation, migration, adaptation.) There will be a craft each week. This class is for students who love science, zoology, and art.

Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
Welcome to Winter Wonderland! In this 4 week class, students will understand why it snows and will learn interesting facts about snowflakes. They will learn about different types of snowstorms. They will explore what animals do in the winter to survive (hibernation, migration, adaptation.) They will be encouraged to ask and answer questions and use critical thinking skills. Each class will include a vibrant PowerPoint presentation, group discussions, and a fun craft. If time permits, we will play a review game at the end of class!
Here is the breakdown of the weeks:
Week 1: All About Snow. Why does it snow? Snowflake facts: Snowflake craft.
Week 2: Hibernation: Hibernating bear craft.
Week 3: Migration: Migrating birds art.
Week 4: Adaptation: Deer craft.

Pencil and eraser
Scissors
Glue (liquid or stick.)
Markers/colored pencils/wax crayons
Construction paper
White paper
Paint and paintbrush
Cotton balls/tissue/toilet paper
Paper plate (optional)

Breakdown of supplies by week:

Week 1: white paper, pencil and eraser, scissors
Week 2: paper plate (or white paper), brown construction paper, cotton balls/tissue/toilet paper, pencil, markers.
Week 3: paint (any colors) and paintbrush, black construction paper, pencil, scissors.
Week 4: Brown construction paper, white construction paper, scissors, glue, markers, 1 cotton ball (or pompom.)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
