Class Experience

Students will learn about the science and history of the Winter Solstice. We will discuss the Winter Solstice vs. the Summer Solstice, solstices vs. equinoxes, and also learn about how solstices and equinoxes relate to nature, the seasons, and the number of daylight & nighttime hours. Students will be taught about the significance of the Winter Solstice throughout history and across cultures. 

Part of our cultural studies will include foods commonly served for the Winter Solstice. A file containing suggested recipes is available upon enrollment. If students would like to prepare some of these (or other winter-related) recipes to enjoy during the second week of our class, they are welcome to do so.

I will explain the science and history of the Winter Solstice to students. They will be encouraged to share and express their thoughts and ideas. I will use slides and video clips to illustrate the concepts being presented. Students will be given opportunities to interact with me and with each other.

Week One: Winter Solstice -- Science, Nature, & Seasons
Week Two: Winter Solstice -- Origin, History, Cultural Traditions, & Scary Characters
