Class Experience

Students will learn about how to draw a polar bear, and how to blend with oil pastels. As students receive step by step instructions, they will draw a polar bear along with the teacher. Emphasis will be placed on using simple shapes to create the polar bear in order to make it easy for students to follow along. Afterwards, students will apply their understanding of a favorite drawing media to color in the polar bear. Oil Pastel is highly encouraged for the coloring portion, but it is not required.

Other Details

Supply List
Recommended:
- White sheet of thick drawing paper/construction paper around 6" by 9"
- Pencil with eraser
- Oil Pastels (white, black/gray, blue, red, orange, yellow, pink are recommended)

You can get a set of 16+ oil pastels at most craft stores (Hobby Lobby/Michaels) for under $10. Student grade oil pastels work great for this project. I use Crayola Oil Pastels with my students. You can find a 28 pack of Crayola Oil pastels at most stores that have them for around $7.

Alternatives:
- White Copy Paper around 6" by 9"
- Drawing utensils of choice (I.E. pencils, colored pencils, markers, etc.)
Keep in mind that a polar bear is mostly white, so black paper with crayons may be a good alternative that will allow for more coloring than using white paper.
