US Grade 7 - 10
In this course, students will learn about the anatomy and physiology of 5 human sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin). We will go over the parts that make up each organ and will discuss the mechanism by which these organs detect various stimuli from the environment. Students will conduct at-home labs with a partner (siblings, parents, friends etc.) of their choice. They will share their results from the lab with the class and we will discuss the observations and results. On the last day, we will also talk about some of the disorders that affect these sense organs. Presentations, practice problems and simulations will be used to teach. I may use online assessments to check for student understanding. Worksheet packets that go along with the presentations and handouts for each lab will be provided. Students are expected to take some notes as they fill in the blanks on the handouts. This class is an interactive class; when in doubt, students are encouraged to ask questions. I will be assisting students while they work. The recording of each session will be available to enrolled students after attending one live session (as long as there are students present in each session). This is meant to help learners review or catch up if they miss anything during class as the class may have diverse learners. Tentative Schedule: Day 1: VISION Introduction to receptors Anatomy of the eye Labeling exercise: Parts of an eye Physiology of how we see Online quiz Assignment: Vision lab Day 2: HEARING Discuss results from the Eye lab Anatomy of the ear Labeling exercise: Parts of an ear Physiology of how we hear Online quiz Assignment: Balance lab Day 3: SMELL & TASTE Discuss results from the Ear lab Anatomy of the tongue Anatomy of the nose Physiology of how we we smell & taste Online quiz Assignment: Taste and Smell lab Day 4: TOUCH Discuss results from the Taste and Smell lab Anatomy of skin Labeling exercise: Parts of human skin Physiology of how sense touch, temperature, pressure, & pain Online quiz Assignment: Touch lab (materials: 8 to 10 toothpicks + scotch tape or any other type of tape) Day 5: DISORDERS/MEDICAL ISSUES Discuss results from the Touch lab Discussion: examples of medical issues with the 5 senses Final online quiz NOTE: =>class may run over the allotted time (by 5 to 10 minutes so) at times depending on the class constitution and student needs =>I will leave the zoom session if nobody shows up within the first 5 minutes of each session.
