Description

Class Experience

Students will have a basic understanding of potential scenarios for winning the Electoral College and the US Presidency, and will have a basic understanding of the US Presidential Elections of 1800, 1824, 1968, 2000, and 2016 -- and understanding those elections should help them make an educated guess about who might win the US Presidential Election in 2020 (regardless of personal preferences or political opinions).
I've been studying politics and presidential elections my entire life. In college, I had a professor invite me to lecture and predict what would happen in the upcoming New Hampshire Primary in the year 2000. I shared with the audience the order I predicted the candidates would finish in and how the media would interpret the outcome. My prediction was precise -- and I've been doing the same thing ever since.

In 2016 I published a book called, "Backdoor to the White House," which is a hypothetical story about what happens if nobody wins the Election College. Though a fictional book, the story is true to the process that is laid out in the United States Constitution. The book is available on Amazon.

We live in a big and fascinating world and one of my goals with my classes is to help kids develop an interest and appreciation for the world around them and different cultures. My classes draw from my own experiences as a world traveler. I've visited and lived abroad in twenty-one countries. I'm a lifelong student of history and I'm also the former deputy director of the historic home of President Ronald Reagan and I am a 2002 graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University with a bachelor of science degree in political science and history. In 2010 I was a candidate for United States Congress. I also have several years of experience in working with students as a teacher and mentor and look forward to having the opportunity to invest in the life of your learner. I love teaching but more than anything I love investing in the lives of young people and bringing them along on a journey.
No homework will be assigned but parents looking for work samples to submit to their schools will be pleased with the supplemental materials I provide. I also provide notes with links to information where students who are interested can continue to study this topic.
A pre-class and post-class handout will be provided.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Please note that this is a non-partisan class. I understand that some kids are passionate about politics. I was when I was a kid! I will alert kids at the beginning of class that this is not a place to debate the 2020 presidential election and the merits of the candidates involved. We are looking at this election as political scientists.
