US Grade 3 - 6
Join us for a discussion about the the thrilling novels in the first story arc written by author Tui T. Sutherland and answer questions about how this book can be related into our current lives and cultures, and the themes that can be found within the pages of these gripping tales. Make new friends, learn something new, and share your own thoughts on the dragon tribes of Pyrrhia! In this class, we will meet twice a week to bring up thought-provoking questions that bring us closer to the characters and plot of the Wing of Fire books. Our discussion will range from comparing books from main ideas to characters, then build in depth and meaning until we are evaluating the morals, themes and motifs found ingrained in the characters, plot and settings of the fantasy world of Pyrrhia. We will fly through the different tribes and explore all that is to be learned from the MudWings, SandWings, SkyWings, SeaWings, RainWings, IceWings, and NightWings. The class is built to be an open-answer type for group participation where each student can voice his or her opinions freely, guided by the teacher through various levels of speculation. One book will be discussed per week, spanning two class periods, and beginning with Book One: The Dragonet Prophecy and moving up through the books that are currently published. Discussion points will range from interesting points in the books (such as "Why do you think the minders chain up Tsunami?") to connecting our own lives to what we have read (such as "Clay believes that he is not a “naturally-hatched hero.” What makes him feel that he does not meet expectations? Have you ever felt that you did not meet expectations? Were you able to overcome those feelings?"). The schedule will be built as follows: Week one: Discuss "The Dragonet Prophesy" Week two: Discuss "The Lost Heir" Week three: Discuss "The Hidden Kingdom" Week four: Discuss "The Dark Secret" Week five: Discuss "The Brightest Night"
Learning Goals
Throughout the duration of this course, students will be asked to talk about in-depth analysis and opinions created from the themes presented in Wings of Fire books. Students will be able to express their opinions, and back up their ideas by answering follow up "why" questions with facts and information found within the novels.
