The Great Barrier Reef is an amazing hotspot of biodiversity filled with many endangered and endemic animal species. 

Topics covered include (minor changes may occur based on student interest):
1) Ecology and characteristics of the reef ecosystem
2) How coral reefs form and coral bleaching
3) Case studies of several local species including dugongs, giant clams, manta rays, blanket octopuses, and many species of fish
4) Major conservation issues facing the reef with a focus on responsible ecotourism

This class will be an interactive lecture using slides, photos, and videos, as well as discussions throughout the class.
Learning Goals
Students will increase their knowledge of zoology and ecology of coral reefs by learning about the diversity of wildlife on the Great Barrier Reef. Students will gain awareness of conservation issues threatening some species. As a side effect, students may become highly enthusiastic about learning science!
