In this wild animal science class, you will explore the habitats, traits, and conservation status of North American Gray Wolves as a four-week course, following a self-paced schedule.

Class experience

US Grade 3 - 6
4 lessons//4 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
North American Gray Wolves: Introduction and Species
This lesson will be an introduction to the types of Gray Wolves found in North America. You will learn about the Gray Wolf as a species and explore their similar/different physical characteristics, specialized adaptations, and different habitats. You will also be taking a deep dive into the overall conservation status of Gray Wolves, specifically the "why" and "how" and "what" wildlife biologists and conservationists are doing to save this species from extinction in the North American wild.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
The Arctic Wolf
This lesson will take an in-depth look at the Arctic Wolf, one of the subspecies of Gray Wolves. You will learn about the unique physical skills and adaptations that help them survive in the extreme habitat of the Arctic north. You will also be taking a deep dive into their habitat and conservation status by exploring some of the dangers they face from aspects of climate change and human proximity.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
The Northwestern Gray Wolf
In this lesson, you will learn about another subspecies of the Gray Wolf known as the Northwestern Gray Wolf. You will learn details about their Northwest habitat, and how their physical skills and characteristics enable them to survive in extreme weather patterns. You will also learn about their conservation status, specifically how deforestation may be affecting their populations on Alaska's west coast archipelagos.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Mexican Gray Wolves
In this lesson you will learn about a critically endangered subspecies of the Gray Wolf, known as the Mexican Gray Wolf. You will learn about their physical characteristics, social behavior and how important they are to having a balanced ecosystem. You will also learn about their conservation status, specifically the "why" and "how" and "what" wildlife biologists and conservationists are doing to save this species from complete extinction in the North American wild.
All of the content presented in this animal science class is factual and has been researched through at least three current scientific resources and aligns with CCSS and NGSS standards-based curriculum guides. (CCSS for ELA standards and NGSS for science standards.) This class and its activities can provide a great way to develop, enrich or follow a learner's interests, as well as supplementing any afterschool or homeschool learning program. Specific lesson related learning goals include:

1. Students will learn facts about the physical characteristics of the Wolf as a species such as size, features, diet and habitat.
2. Students will learn how scientists use information about wolves to compare and classify them into groups.
3. Students will learn why conservation of wolves is important to the ecosystems where they live and what is being done to prevent their extinction.
4. Students will also learn new science vocabulary words related to the study of wolves as a species.
5. Students will learn specific characteristics and special adaptations of four subtypes of Gray Wolves. (Arctic Wolf, Northwestern Wolf, Alexander Archipelago Wolf, Mexican Gray Wolf)
I have a BA in Elementary Education and my credentials are uploaded to Outschool. I taught classroom science, art and language arts to both preschool and elementary aged students for almost twenty years before coming to the Outschool online platform. As a child, I first developed a strong love of nature and animals through books and hands-on experiences. As a teacher, I'm constantly reading, researching and learning everything I can about wild animal conservation and the natural world.
Homework Offered
Examples include: a creature labeling and classification activity, matching and identifying creature concepts, writing vocabulary words and conservation brainstorming worksheets designed to support science, writing and math concepts. I'll also include templates or art prompts for creative enrichment.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
I have also included an assessment quiz with each lesson as part of the downloadable activities. You can also use it as a fun way to wrap up the learning experience. I will also include an OPTIONAL link to an assessment quiz I created using Kahoot.
Grades Offered
Each learner will receive a certificate at the end of each week after completing each video lesson and its activities. Then at the end of the course, learners will receive a comprehensive certificate for completing the entire course of four weeks.
Learner Supply List:
1. Weekly activity sheets or coloring/drawing/labeling templates are posted for download each week in the classroom. These activities can be printed or opened up on a computer or tablet to view.
2. Notebook or sketchpad or loose paper. If you are not printing the above activity sheets or coloring/drawing/labeling templates, you will probably want to have a notebook for writing, labeling or drawing assignments.
3. Pencils or crayons and markers for completing Labeling, tracing, coloring or writing activities.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
1. NO scary or violent content allowed here, just scientific facts presented in a positive way to encourage learning and scientific discovery.

2. Video lessons posted were created by me and a link will be posted in the classroom to its YouTube. No account is necessary to view.

3. Weekly quizzes using Kahoot will also be posted to further extend and enrich the learning experience. No account necessary to view.
