Class Experience

**Please note: this class meets three times total - - sometimes it will be once a week for three weeks, and sometimes it will be 3 classes all in the same week! Because of different requests from parents, I try to keep it flexible and every class offering is a bit different in the scheduling!**

This advanced Wilderness Survival Skills 201 class will go more in depth into some of the basics that we learned in the Wilderness Survival Skills 101 course! Topics will include:

*Quick review of WSS 101
*The Rule of Threes
*Threats: Hypothermia & Hyperthermia
*Wild Mushrooms, Berries, Flowers & Roots
*Plant identification
*Practical survival protein
*Traps & Snares
*Water contamination & treatment
*Burned bowl water purification
*Fire troubleshooting
*and more!

This class will be presented via powerpoint presentation and is mostly lectured based, although students will have several opportunities to ask or answer questions. Although homework is not required, students are encouraged to write a few paragraphs after class, to be read out loud to their families.

By the end of this course, learners will have a more advanced knowledge base to survive in the wilderness or be self-sufficient in any given natural disaster!

Parental Guidance
**This class was created as a continuation of my Wilderness Survival Skills 101 course - - that class is a requirement for this class, so please be sure your learner has completed that course before enrolling in this one! **Parents should be aware that this class discusses practical survival protein - - which includes fish, small mammals, birds, snakes and insects. I am a huge animal lover and cringe at the thought of having to take the life of a small animal, but when faced with the prospect of surviving in the wilderness, this is a life-saving skill that needs to be addressed. If this is offensive to you, please consider another class instead. :)
Supply List
The three class presentations will be uploaded to the classroom so that students may download them and save them for future reference. Other handouts are also provided, covering various topics discussed in class.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Having been exposed to camping and wilderness since I could walk, I have a passion for teaching others the skills for surviving in the wilderness. Considering recent acts of nature around the world, including earthquakes, hurricanes, flash floods and tsunamis, I also believe it is essential for everyone to have at least the minimal skills needed to start a fire, forage for food, find and treat water, and build a shelter.

My life experience, as well as recent coursework thru Alderleaf Wilderness College give me the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to pass this important information on to your learner on a level that they can understand!
