Class Experience

**Quick note! Sometimes this class will be once a week for four weeks, and sometimes it will be four classes all in the same week! Because of different requests from parents, I try to keep it flexible and every class offering is a bit different in the scheduling!**

ATTENTION PARENTS! This class will be presented via powerpoint presentation and IS MOSTLY LECTURE BASED, although students will have several opportunities to ask or answer questions. Engagement in the live class is limited to questions from the students and is different in every class. If your learner requires massive engagement, you might prefer to enroll them in the FLEX version of this class, as my lecture style may not be a good fit for them.

Survival skills are essential, even if you will never be stuck in the wilderness! Learning how to cope in an emergency is essential; this class will teach you the basics of how to become a wilderness SURVIVOR! Students will learn the following basic tools of survival:

1. Survival Kit and Gear
2. First Aid Kit
3. Basic First Aid Techniques
4. Positive Mental Attitude
5. Basic Needs for Wilderness Survival
6. S.T.O.P! Stop, Think, Observe, Plan!
7. Finding and Building a Shelter
8. How to Build a Fire
9. Signaling for Help
10. Finding and Treating Water
11. Foraging for Food
12. Navigation

At the end of the course, students will be directed to a free, online first-aid course, where students have the opportunity to become First Aid Certified. Access to a free CPR course will also be included.

The class powerpoint presentation and many helpful links will be distributed AFTER each class is completed. The "Backpacking 101" handout will be uploaded AFTER our final class together.

Learning Goals

Students will leave class with basic skills to survive if lost in the wilderness, along with basic first aid skills that can be used for the rest of their life, in and around their homes as well as out in the wilderness. Some of these skills will also be helpful during natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, power outages etc.

Parental Guidance
This class will be presented via powerpoint presentation and IS MOSTLY LECTURE BASED, although students will have several opportunities to ask or answer questions. During each class, a few different video clips are used in order to enhance learning opportunities. Although homework is not required, students are encouraged to write a few paragraphs after class, to be read out loud to their families. **Parents should be aware that we touch on the survival story from the book "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" which is also the movie "127 hours". I do NOT go into detail, but students will figure out that the man makes the difficult decision to remove his own arm in order to survive. Hypothermia is also mentioned, which can ultimately lead to death in the wilderness. Although these are situations we all want to avoid in the wilderness, it is necessary to learn about them in order to know how to survive out there. Some students are bothered by this, so keep this in mind in your decision to enroll! **Parents should also be aware that this class discusses survival protein - - which includes fish, frogs, eggs, snakes and insects. I am a huge animal lover and cringe at the thought of having to take the life of a small animal, but when faced with the prospect of surviving in the wilderness, this is a life-saving skill that needs to be addressed. If this is offensive to you, please consider another class instead. :)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Having been exposed to camping and wilderness since I could walk, I have a passion for teaching others the skills for surviving in the wilderness. Considering recent acts of nature around the world, including earthquakes, hurricanes, flash floods and tsunamis, I also believe it is essential for everyone to have at least the minimal skills needed to start a fire, forage for food, find and treat water, and build a shelter.

My life experience, as well as recent coursework thru Alderleaf Wilderness College give me the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to pass this important information on to your learner on a level that they can understand!
